Working Document V.1
In summer 2025, J. Dakota Brown and I were invited to a short residency in Austin, TX, where we developed a pedagogical publication for the New Arguments design history series.
Our pamphlet, Working Document V.1, contains two contrasting texts. The primary essay, “Looking for Work,” adapts Dakota’s ongoing research into the labor history of graphic design for classroom use. This text sits in tension with a more immediate, stream-of-consciousness piece, written during the last hours of the pamphlet’s production.
The essay in this publiation is set in Neue Haas Grotesk, an archetypal Swiss Modernist typeface, while the marginal text appears in BB Harber, a contemporary variable font released in 2023 and designed for the slipperiness of the screen.

This project was made possible thanks to Jimmy Van Luu, New Arguments’ heroic organizer, who also helped us produce this small edition in his studio, Riso Riso.
