i.8. Air Talk

Live Audio-Visual Performance, Publication
Air Talk

Air Talk was live performance and print publication made in collaboration with Clinton Van Arnam in the spring of 2023.

This project began with a series of instructions exchanged between artists for the collection of still images, sound recordings, and videos from various locations outside Providence. This process generated a library of visual and auditory material that was transformed into a live sound and video performance in which artists played a piano and modular synthesizer that controlled the visuals in real time.
Air Talk was performed in 3 separate acts expressed through 3 different variations on a single grid structure.
The live performance was accompanied by a print publication that opens to 16 by 9, the same aspect ratio as the video from the live piece.

The publication’s cover contains the instructions that guided the project, and its interior contains 3 sections of double-sided sheets designed to be unfolded and layered in a way that echoes the moving compositions from the 3 acts in the performance. Using the same grid structure and visuals from the video, this print publication is a physical translation of a live event.

Air Talk was conceived of and produced in the context of Shona Kitchen’s Techlands course at the Rhode Island School of Design.
