Radical Modernism
Print Publication

A print publication that republishes graphic designer Dan Friedman’s 1994 essay, Radical Modernism, and celebrates some of the ideas presented within it by exploring existing graphic design artifacts that expose or subvert the grid.

This piece includes 4 components: a double-sided broadsheet featuring Friedman’s text and a selection of his design work, a saddle-stitch booklet featuring a selection of design work that explores, exposes, or breaks the grid, a double-sided grid sheet (dots and squares), and acrylic stencils featuring the letters “R” and “M” designed to work as covers as well as drawing tools.

This project was designed in Doug Scott’s Type 3 class at the Rhode Island School of Design in fall 2022.
