i.1. Perform—Produce
Graphic Design MFA Thesis (RISD)
Perform—Produce
Perform—Produce is a graphic design MFA thesis that investigates design labor, value, tools, and the body. This project includes original essays, visual research, and interviews with performance artist, Bridget Moser, designer and educator, J. Dakota Brown, artist and curator, Micah Lexier, and designer and educator, Doug Scott.
This thesis was published in book form and was designed according to strict formal constraints — it is set entirely in one typeface and one type size only, using negative space strategically to create order and hierarchy throughout the publication.
Perform—Produce was also published online. The project’s website follows the same visual language and typographic approach as the printed book.
This thesis was prefaced by Glossary, a short video work that activates library books and analog typography to capture five key terms that express the central ethos of the project. This was developed before the body of the thesis but sets the tone for many of the ideas expressed more in depth later on.
Perform—Produce was presented at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in May 2024, and was accompanied by an installation that included a table of printed matter and a looped video projection.
