The project’s website follows the same visual language and typographic approach as the printed book. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; This thesis was prefaced by Glossary, a short video work that activates library books and analog typography to capture five key terms that express the central ethos of the project. Ought a chair be defined as any object one can sit on? If so, isn’t a carpet a chair? What about a horse? &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; This project investigates the chair as a symbolic, discursive, and designed object in order to explore its broad and diverse expressions: the chair as architecture, the chair as status symbol, the chair as prosthesis, the chair as locus of power, the chair as a tool. Sebald) Saturn’s Rings is a visual translation of W.G. Sebald’s 1995 literary work, The Rings of Saturn. Designed as a 1:1 translation of the 2016 English paperback edition, this paperback book features the same margin size, typesetting, and page count as its referent. Reconstructed page-by-page, this book replaces 296 pages of the original text with images found in various art, science, nature, and historical archives. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Saturn’s Rings features 683 archival images of objects, archeological artifacts, people, geological phenomena, astronomy, war, art and nature, and aims to reinterpret the original book’s textual content with visual symbolism, poetry, and metaphor. Participants were given instructions read out to them by an AI voice-over. Each was assigned a specific role and given precise instructions on when and how to perform each tasks from font installation to file setup and layout. Each source object was measured precisely and then flattened into a paper artifact. This includes objects such as sixteen bike racks spiral bound, a chain-mesh door made out of vellum and coil, a construction paper book of seventy-eight window panes, rolls of pedestrian crossing lines, etc., all of which were produced at an exact 1:1 scale. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; These objects were presented alongside a video of the designer measuring features of the built environment around Providence, RI.
